It was so much fun! We arrived to an awaiting crowd gathered in their dining hall. After singing there and handing out gift bags, we went floor by floor (about 15 floors total) singing and handing out more gift bags door to door.

THIS is what it is all about. Not just the singing and giving gifts- that's the fun part. It's about getting outside of our insulated bubbles, investing time in others, sharing our hearts, and learning to love as God intended. It's about getting to know folks on a personal level and building relationships- the way God does with us.

Thanks to everyone who came and helped assemble 120 gift bags and sang their hearts out. A special thanks to Christina for leading us in song even with her injured arm in a sling!

November 13, 2010

We spent the afternoon of Saturday, November 13 preparing and serving a hot dog lunch and playing bingo with our friends at the Mary Walker Towers downtown. We served hamburgers and hot dogs to approximately 35 to 40 of our homeless friends. The cookout was held in the parking lot of First Baptist Church downtown. First Baptist was very gracious to offer their facilities to everyone for this event. Yes, we served food. But, more importantly, we sat down and shared the meal and conversation with our guests. As Henri Nouwen said, "It is truly possible for Christians to overcome divisions around a common table that excludes no one." How true. It was a blessing being a part of this day of ecumenical unity in service to the poor and homeless.

September 11, 2010

September 11, 2010- 7 of us joined forces with Unity in the Community to help a homeowner in East Lake clean up her yard and plant a flower garden. We painted a 10' X 12' room and tranformed it into a TV/Family Room for children to play and hang out in with a sitter while their parent or guardian attends budgeting or nutrition classes. The room was outfitted with new paint colors, new sofa, end tables, lamps, rug, toys, books, games, videos, and a storage bin to place them in. Grant contributed some of his framed photography to hang on the walls. The youth did an amazing job on this room as well as installing shelves and sorting canned foods for the food pantry. We also stocked their freezer with 35 pounds of gound beef and chicken to use as part of their nutrition program. Another awesome ARK day with the high school youth from Christ UMC. Church, be proud of them and, when you get a chance, tell them. God is using them.

February 2010 Project- Valentines Fiesta at St. Andrews

Nothing but fun this day! Thanks Service Station Class! We met at the church at 11am this morning to combine all of the food and pour into containers to keep it hot and to serve from. At 12noon, we left to go downtown to serve our brothers and sisters in need in Miller Park. We served hot lunches to about 50 guests in the park from 12:30 to 1:30. I have come to know many of the folks we served through Wednesdays at Forrest Avenue UMC. I had put the word out "on the street" last week that we would be in the park today and many of our friends showed up. It was another wonderful day serving and seeing Christ. He even shows up in 20-degree weather. The sun came out the whole time we were there to keep us warm. We had 19 youth and 11 adults. The youth served food and visited with our guests. It was truly another "kingdom afternoon."

One guest commented, "It was so cold this morning, I thought about not leaving my camp. But when I looked at the flyer I got last week and saw that it said ARK- Acts of Random Kindness- I thought, if those youth can come out in the cold to bring us a meal, I can at least show my appreciation by coming to the park and enjoying the lunch they had prepared."

We also had a middle-school youth come with their parent who had made blankets (by hand) to give out. Another high school student in our group cooked the recipe himself and brought it to serve. Afterwards, we took the youth to eat lunch at Rossell's Pizza. One youth led a short devotion there about what it means to be part of a community and how God calls us to live in such a community. He made note of the wide range of ages working within our own ARK community today. He closed by saying, "I like the fact that most people do community service around Christmas and New Years. But we do it monthly throughout the year."- very insightful for a 17-year-old. We ate at Roselli's Pizza, as we often do, because the owner of Roselli's always give us a great deal on lunch. He says he does this as his way of supporting what the youth at our church are doing.

Thanks be to God for the many ways He moves in and through our community.

December 2009 Project

Project ARK Day of Giving- Saturday, December 19, 2009

10am- 15 youth met at The Hut. What a great representation from our high school youth! They once again gave up a full day to give to others. We prepared 100 gift bags for Hospice. Hospice staff will deliver these gift bags to their patients. Each bag was filled with five different travel-sized toiletry itemschap stick, hand lotion , candy, etc. (all 500 toiletry items donated from Chattem Drugs/ candy donated by Sathers Candy Distributors). Many thanks to those two companies! We also prepared 100 gift bas for the elderly residents at the Mary Walker Towers downtown. Each of those bags was filled with cookies, fruit, snacks, candy, a tree ornament, and a note from Project ARK letting them know who we are and why we do what we do. We also made a quick trip to the grocery store to purchase enough food to fill nine large food boxes. Each box was filled with meat, fresh fruit and vegetables, canned vegetables, pasta, rice, eggs, a note about ARK (in Spanish) and other goodies.

12noon- We delivered the gift bags to every resident at Mary Walker Towers and visited with many of them.

1:00-3:00- After we left Mary Walker Towers, we delivered the food boxes door to door to nine families in the Highland Park neighborhood around the St. Andrews Center.

3:00-4:00 Lunch

6:00- We met back at The Hut and went Christmas Caroling to six senior members of the church. We met at Elizabeth Haynes' house afterwards for a big hot dog and chili dinner.

This was a long day but well worth it! It was a day of serving Christ by serving His people. I pray that the experiences from today will help the youth begin to understand that our faith is not just about us or our inner peace. Days like today make the gospel come to life. Days like today give purpose and meaning to "the kingdom." Days like today make for an authentic demonstration of the love of God. We also learned that we could all use some Spanish lessons. Thank God for Grant and his ability to communicate in Spanish. The families knew we were coming. But it helped a lot to communicate, rather than just stand on their front porch holding a box of food and grinning.

We greatly appreciate everyone who helped to make this a wonderful day of service and worship!

November 09 Project Completed

November 7- Hug-A-Tree at Audubon Acres:

We had 18 youth come out and help take care of the earth at Audubon Acres. We spent 2 hours dragging piles and piles of privet into a huge bonfire to destroy this invasive plant. Audubon Acres is an oasis of natural history in the middle of East Brainerd suburbia. It is amazing to still be able to experience an island of protected natural beauty as it has existed for thousands of years. The privet is a reminder of man's touch. It is a constant threat to the natural order of creation. If left unchecked, the privet, like kudzu, would eventually choke out the native plants and habitats, altering the landscape. Why did we do this? What does it have to do with our faith? Are we not asked to be good stewards of the treasures God has entrusted to us? Destroying the privet was a small way we are able to act and meditate upon our reponsibility toward the natural environment. It was our way of adding to the work of other passionate volunteers and helping the Audubon Society protect this special place. One of our youth, Kristian Canler, gave a very thoughful and prayerful talk/homily centered upon creation and our faith. Sometimes being the hands and feet of Christ involves taking those hands and feet into the woods and just standing in awe of The Creator.

October 2009 Project Completed

Saturday, October 10- Eighteen high school youth and 7 adults helped to serve lunch to the elderly residents of the Mary Walker Towers downtown. What a great day this was!We had planned to serve lunch in the dining hall to the residents with them seated at tables decorated for the fall season. But plans quickly changed when we got there at noon. The dining hall was being renovated. There were no tables, no chairs... and no residents. So, Plan B went into effect (we didn't know we had a Plan B). We set up a serving station by the elevators, prepared the plate lunches, and carried them to each apartment individually. One building had 8 floors, the other building had 6. This actually turned out better. We were able to serve about 80 to 90 residents at their front door. We were also able to visit better with them this way. Many residents expressed their appreciation by word, smiles, or hugs. Much thanks to the Service Station Sunday School Class and parents who helped cook pot roast for the lunches!!

September Project Completed

The youth worked very hard Saturday for several hours at Forest Avenue UMC. They sorted and organized the clothes closets. They also converted a storage room into a food pantry. They dug up old tile, built 5 shelving units (200 square feet of shelving), and then stocked the shelves with food donated by Christ UMC members. What an awesome job from 8 amazing young people! As we sat down and had lunch, we were entertained by Ernie, a musician who wanted to share his gift of song with us. Once again, everyone was blessed. What's more, the blessings will continue as the clothes closet and food pantry helps our sister church on Forest Avenue minister daily to those in need. Thanks to everyone who made this project possible. Items that went into the packs:Tarp, bottled water, Toothbrush, Tube Toothpaste, Bar of Soap, 2 Cans Tuna, Can Mandarin Orange Slices for Vitamin C, 2 Cans sardines, 1 Can Castleberry Beef Stew, Heavy Sweat Shirt, Heavy pair Sweat Pants, Knit Cap, 1 Pair Gloves, Can Opener, Bible.

Thank you to everyone who helped with this project- either by donating money, backpacks, or the items to go in them! Better is giving employees paid time to serve. Building a house. Painting a school. Empowering our youth. Feeding the hungry. Or revitalizing a community. Better is a call to action. A rallying cry. Fearless. Determined. Passionate. And connected. It is searching within. Reaching out. Heading into the eye of the storm. Adventuring out to the middle of nowhere. And doing so with purpose. So when the sun sets and we think about what tomorrow bring, we understand that better is not what we do. Several youth left to buy a blanket for a man who asked for one to sleep on that night. They also prayed with him. Not just the biological role of sustenance and fuel for the body. But all the other ways that food is used to define us as a people. One of the very first rules that God lays down for hungry Adam & Eve concerns food: Eat anything you want except for what comes from that tree. God gets very specific with the Hebrews in the book of Leviticus when he describes which plants, animals, and birds are off-limits for use as food. Jesus’ first temptation from Satan in the desert is to make bread out of a rock. More than once, Jesus made food the focus of a miracle when he fed thousands of hungry people with a few loaves of white bread and a couple of sardines. Jesus took great liberties with an age-old traditional holiday meal (Passover). He said from now on the bread would represent his body and the wine would represent his blood. Jesus, come on- that’s just gross… and weird.

We use food to commemorate and celebrate just about every milestone or special occasion: birthdays, weddings, graduations, new jobs, even funerals. Turkey and dressing is synonymous with Thanksgiving. You’re supposed to eat black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day for good luck. Whole cultures claim their own distinct types of food: Chinese food, Mexican food, Italian food. French fries, Spanish rice, Irish coffee, Canadian bacon, and so on.

When someone special is coming to visit us, we prepare a special meal or go eat at a special restaurant. We use food to help us make memories. We use food to help heal. We use food to comfort. We use food to just enjoy someone’s company. Food can be used to express genuine love. Jesus knew a little bit about this when he used bread and wine to symbolize his transforming love for us. He also made it very clear that we are to carry this transforming love to a hurting world. Let’s do this together by filling soup bowls in Miller Park on January 10, 2009. It’s like we were made for this.

December 2008- Christmas Carols

Project ARK also went Christmas Caroling to five elderly and widowed members of our church family on Saturday evening, December 13, beginning at 5:30pm. This is true. But how do we really experience that? We can get a sense of his creative power by looking at the beauty of this planet and the heavens that surround it. We can get a sense of his closeness when we pray or meditate. But how can we actually see God walking and talking? We witness this when we see someone totally let God live through them. God showed us what this looks like 2,000 years ago through the person Jesus.

Jesus explained to his followers, “Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. Be generous with your lives. Open up to others and you’ll prompt people to open up to God.” (Matthew 5: 13, 14, 16, the Message)

What are God-flavors and God-colors? Certain aromas draw us into the kitchen looking for the source. Certain color combinations draw us into an artist’s painting looking for meaning. Could it be that our actions help people “smell” and “see” something that draws them toward God? Jesus said that it is though us that this world would experience God. So, what do we do? We feed when someone is hungry. We clothe when someone needs clothing. We visit when someone is sick or lonely. We listen when someone needs to talk. We forgive when someone needs forgiving.

We even bake cookies when it will help brighten someone’s day.

We do any number of these things not to bring attention to ourselves. We do them to bring attention to the fact that 1) There is a God; 2) He is walking and talking among us; and 3) He loves us.

Jesus said, “You are blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.” So, yes, God can even be found in a cookie!

Amen.
______

Come join us on Saturday, December 13 to make Christmas cookies at the Ronald McDonald House. We will leave the church at 10am.

Why do what we do?

Jesus makes it pretty clear that loving others is not an option. There is a lot of pain in the world. He expects us to help meet the needs of those around us who are hurting (physically, emotionally, spiritually). Saint James said that words alone are not enough. We have to back up our faith with action. There is a good quote that says, “The world doesn’t need more words. The world needs more words made flesh.” How true.

What is the mission? It has been said that the Church exists to equip and mobilize men and women for God’s mission in the world. That says a lot. But what is this mission? The mission is described all through the Bible.

Isaiah 58 expresses the mission like this: “Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.”

Micah 6:8 says, “People, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Sounds like some social justice issues might be a part of this mission.

Jesus identifies personally with this mission. He stated clearly, “For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.” (Matthew 25:35-36) Wow. Jesus says if we help the down and out it’s the same as doing it for him. Our eternal destiny depends on how we deal with those that are in need all around us.

Jesus also talked a lot about a mysterious kingdom. He described a kingdom where everything is completely different from the kingdoms we know about. He talks about those that are the least being the greatest and the last being first. He told us to pray for this kingdom to come upon the earth. He even said that this kingdom is among you. This kingdom is among us. When we help take care of each other, we begin to see this new kingdom take shape.

Isn’t this just social work? Maybe, if it is not done with the love of God pouring through us. Receiving a simple act of kindness may be the closest someone ever comes to God. ARK simply provides opportunities to be the hands and feet of God. It just might help change lives and hearts… including our own.

St. Andrews Wish List

The After-School Program at St. Andrews is in need of several items. There were ten of us who participated. We met at the church at 10am and prepared 165 sack lunches. Each lunch bag contained a ham & cheese sandwich, an apple or banana (the bananas were the most popular!), peanut butter crackers, and a bottle of water (donated by Publix!). Before we left the church, we prayed for those that we would be serving.
Once we arrived at the park, the hungry folks came quickly from all directions. It didn't take long to give away all of the lunches. We then hung around a while to talk and pray with several of the folks. Everyone received a blessing. FYI- The City requires a permit ($25) for any activity such as this conducted in the park.

September 2008- Baking for Ronald McDonald

September 20, 2008- We went to the Chattanooga Ronald McDonald House and baked cookies for guests of the house.
